April Science Challenge - Plant Growth
Resources:
- Clear cup for planting
- Marbles, stones or pebbles
- Water
- Plant bulb of your choice
Instructions:
- Fill your container approximately ¾ full with stones, marbles or pebbles.
- Place the bulb on top (make sure the bulb is root side down).
- Fill your container with water so it just covers the bottom of the container.
- Place the container with the bulb in a place with lots of sunlight (e.g., near a window).
- Continue observing the bulb every day and see what happens. Remember to add water to the container as the water level goes down.
- Record your observations each week. You could do this by drawing a picture or measuring the plant using a ruler.
Please send a photo on Class Dojo to your teacher. All entries will receive a sticker.
The Science
By planting a bulb in a clear container with marbles, stones or pebbles you will be able to observe the roots growing. You will also be able to observe the plant growing above the stones. The roots of a plant take up the water and nutrients from the soil. They also keep the plant in the ground. The stem carries the water and nutrients to different parts of the plant.
