At Valence Primary School, we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work for PSHE. Jigsaw is child-centred and aims to help develop pupils into confident, independent, healthy, and responsible members of society, as well as developing them morally, socially, intellectually, socially, and spiritually.

Intent

At Valence Primary School, we follow the Jigsaw scheme of work for PSHE. Jigsaw is child-centred and aims to help develop pupils into confident, independent, healthy, and responsible members of society, as well as developing them morally, socially, intellectually, socially, and spiritually.

Through our whole-school approach to PSHE, it is our belief that excellence in these areas will lead to excellence across the curriculum and beyond in later life. Thus, our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.

With an ever-changing society, we aim to provide our pupils with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them. They are given opportunities in PSHE and assemblies to develop self-motivation, confidence and an understanding of their rights and responsibilities within our diverse society.

Implementation

EYFS

In the Foundation Stage, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum. The objectives taught are the Personal, Social and Emotional Development statements from EYFS Development Matters.  Reception also uses the Jigsaw Scheme of Work materials (see below).

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2

At Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World Learning.

Pupils are taught PSHE using ‘Jigsaw’ which is a spiral, progressive scheme of work, covering all of the above and 'aims to prepare children for life, helping them to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world’. There is a strong emphasis on emotional Literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. It includes mindfulness to allow children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

At Valence Primary School, the Sex Education aspects of PSHE are also taught through the Jigsaw scheme.

PSHE is taught through Jigsaw’s six half termly themes with each year group studying the same unit at the same time (at their own level):

  • Autumn 1: Classes draw up their own charters, then 4 ZOR lessons and one RR Lesson
  • Autumn 2: Differences (including anti-bullying)Spring 1: Dreams and Goals
  • Spring 2: Healthy Me
  • Summer 1: Relationships
  • Summer 2: Changing Me (including Sex Education)

It also identifies links to British Values, and SMSC and is taught in such a way as to reflect the overall aims, values, and ethos of the school.

Wider Curriculum

We believe that focusing on developing a 'Growth Mindset' in our children will help them to build resilience, independence, and confidence; embrace challenges; foster a love of learning; and increase their level of happiness. We do this through the language we use in class, praising children for their efforts, and using language to encourage children to change their way of thinking. This supports both our school and PSHE aims and values, and we focus on Growth Mindsets in all aspects of school life.

PSHE, including SMSC and BV, is an integral part of the whole school curriculum and is therefore often taught within another subject area.

Assemblies are linked to the Jigsaw scheme, British Values, and SMSC and cover any additional subjects that would benefit the whole school.

We use the Zones of Regulation framework as a shared approach and language to talk to children about identifying and managing their feelings.

PSHE Update

Our PSHE curriculum has been modified slightly in Autumn 1. A new revised curriculum on New Beginnings will be taught to our pupils. One that sets the scenes and captures new beginnings in a more pragmatic way.

In Autumn 1, we will be learning about new beginnings in a fun and practical way. During these 6 or 7 weeks, all pupils will create a classroom charter which is like a list of rules for the classroom and playground that we will all agree on together. Children will be invited to sign this document to show their ownership and commitment to the rules.

They will cover lessons on Zones of Regulation which teach our pupils emotional literacy and self-regulation. These lessons will teach pupils how to understand their feelings and manage them better. In addition, we will learn about children’s rights and what they mean for us. They will also explore children rights under the conventions on the right of the child.

KS1: Revise what a right is and why they are important. Focus on articles most age appropriate such as article 24 (right to best health), article 28 (right to education),

Lower KS2: Revise ABCDE of Rights and discuss how rights can be applied in and out of school.

Upper KS2: Revise ABCDE of rights and debate how rights are not upheld using topical current global affairs.
