June Science Challenge - Straw Rocket

Resources:

  • Normal straw
  • Wide straw
  • Sellotape
  • Paper
  • Card
  • Paperclips
  • Felt tip pens

Instructions:

  1. Cut the wider straw until it is approximately one -third of the length of the normal straw.
  2. Completely seal one end of the wide straw with Sellotape so that no air can pass through. You can check this by blowing through the open end of the straw.
  3. Draw a picture of a rocket on a piece of paper and use Sellotape to attach it to the wider straw.
  4. Put the wider straw onto one end of the normal straw and blow!
  5. Try pointing the straw at different angles and blowing harder/softer to see how it changes the flight of your rocket.

Please send a photo on Class Dojo to your teacher. All entries will receive a sticker.

The Science

When you blow air into a straw, it travels to the end and pushes it out. This means your rocket will move. The harder you blow air into the straw, the more energy the air has and the further your rocket will fly!

Science of the Month: Transport- Rockets

Choose one of the following topics to investigate:

  1. Why do you think rockets are important?
  2. Which country were rockets first used in? What were they used for?
  3. What year was the first satellite launched into space? What was it called?
